Franklin First December Newsletter 2005 Note: The Greater Franklin Chamber of Commerce is pleased to present www.experiencethreerivers.com. This brand new website is the region's directory of business and events. Think of it as a bulletin board where there's always room for your notice and you never run out of pins! NEW EVENTS THIS MONTH: Free Medicare Part D Information Sessions December 1st, 6th, 8th & 13th To educate the community on the coverage choices for specific health care needs, information is being presented by Norm Sedgley, President of Managed Health Concepts and Pam Hannan, Independence Trust Company Client Services Officer. These educators are trained on Medicare Part D Prescription Drug laws and are also experienced in health insurance. Their goal is to serve as an educational resource for individuals as they sign up for the coverage. Sessions are being held at the Main Office of Franklin Savings Bank, 387 Central Street in Franklin, on: Thursday, Dec 1st; Tuesday, Dec 6th; and Thursday, Dec 8th. Attendees may choose a morning session from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. or an afternoon session from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. on each of the days. Seating is limited. The Shaw Brothers Holiday Concert December 2nd Each year, the Shaw Brothers perform over 100 concerts for audiences of every kind throughout this country and much of the world. Accompanying themselves on a variety of instruments, The Shaw Brothers serve up their own unique blend of traditional, contemporary and original songs interspersed with humor, poems and stories. Tickets: $14 Adult advance, $16 at the door. $14 Senior, $12 Children 12 and under. Many local organizations are involved in helping provide a fun filled evening for children in Franklin and the surrounding communities. There will be entertainment, door prizes, raffles, make and take tables, and goodie bags for all. The workshop will be held from 4:00 to 6:30 p.m. Tree lighting will take place in Kendrick Park at 6:45 p.m. and be sure to get your picture taken with Santa. This is a FREE event so be sure to come and celebrate the holidays with us. Call the TRIP Center for more information. Christmas Breakfast and Winter Sports Raffle December 3rd Join Mix 94.1fm's Fred Caruso with an early Cash-N-Cans event at the Pines Community Center in Northfield. It's their annual Christmas Breakfast from 7:30-10am! Bring a donation of non-perishable food items or cash for Cash-N-Cans! Also, a portion of each adult breakfast will be donated to Cash-N-Cans. Santa arrives at 8:30 for pictures with the kids! The Pines Community Center in Northfield will also be hosting a Winter Sports Sale Saturday December 3rd from 8-11am. Sell your used skis, poles, boots, skates, sleds, jackets, ski pants, gloves, hats, snow shoes, hockey equipment, ice fishing gear and more!. Lights of Memory- Honor your loved ones December 4th The FRH Auxiliary will be sponsoring their 20th Lights of Memory. Ceremony on Sunday December 4th at 4 PM at the hospital. You can purchase bulbs for $3 in memory of a loved one. All proceeds go to scholarships for those furthering their education in Health related fields. All bulbs must be purchased by December 1st. If you would like to purchase bulbs please stop at the Hospital Gift Shop or Front Desk. The Thrift Clothes Closet in downtown Franklin will donate all of the wonderful clothing for this event and local beauticians will do the models hair and makeup. If you would like to be a model, please contact Nancy at the TRIP Center, or just stop by for the show. Show will begin at 10:30 a.m., lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m. so be sure to call the Center to reserve a spot for lunch. This event is FREE and is open to the public. Gift Wrapping December 6th Have too many presents to wrap? On Tuesday, December 6th from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m., bring your gifts to the TRIP Center and have them wrapped by some of our wonderful volunteers! We provide the paper and bows. There is no charge for this service, but donations are always appreciated! Mystery Lunch December 7th Join the TRIP Center for another exciting mystery trip and enjoy lunch at a surprise location. The cost is $5.00 per person for transportation; lunch is your responsibility. Van will depart at 10:30 a.m. Sign up early at the Center. Holiday House at Owl's Rest Farm December 9th Join the TRIP Center as we visit the Holiday House at Owl's Rest Farm in Sanbornton at 10:15 a.m. on December 9th. Christmas trees and decorations will light up every corner of their vintage farmhouse and complimentary refreshments will be served. Shop for unique gifts and decorations in their floral emporium. Admission is FREE; there is a suggested $1.00 donation for the van. Mall of New Hampshire Trip December 12th Shop for your last minute Christmas gifts and have lunch at one the great restaurants in the Mall. The cost for the TRIP Center event is $6.00 for the van departing at 9:00 am; lunch is your responsibility. Lady of La Salette Shrine December 14th The TRIP Center will travel to Enfield, NH to see the beautiful Christmas lights at the Lady of La Salette Shrine. We will stop for dinner at an area restaurant along the way. Cost is $6.00 for the van departing at 3:30 p.m.; dinner is your responsibility. La Salette Shrine Bus Trip December 15th The Apollo Club of Franklin will have a bus to the La Salette Shrine in Attleboro, MA on Wednesday, December 7th. The bus will leave the TRIP Center at 11:30 AM. We will return around 8:00 PM. There will be a stop on the way. Price is $25.00. For more information or to reserve your seat on the bus, call Sandy at 934-9042. Pot Luck and Yankee Swap December 16th Join the TRIP Center and bring your favorite dish to share for lunch. After we sample all of the great dishes, we will gather around the Christmas tree for an old fashioned Yankee Swap. To participate, you will need to bring a gift-wrapped item ($5.00 limit) with you the day of the swap. Enjoy punch and cookies as we swap gifts and stay and sing your favorite Christmas carols with us! Come early and join us for breakfast at 9:00 a.m. or arrive by 11:30 a.m. for the swap. If you want to participate, please sign up at the TRIP Center. Mix Cash-N-Cans Fundraising Dance December 17th The 3rd annual Mix Cash-N-Cans fundraising dance, sponsored by Ed Paige Trucking, takes place Saturday December 17th from 7am-Midnight at the Elks Lodge in Franklin. Lakes Region Snowmobile Club December 19th Your Lakes Region Snowmobile Club meets the 3rd Monday of each month at 7:00 pm at the Franklin Fire Department. New faces are always encouraged to attend. Bring a friend or a family member too. OHRV Training Course December 28th Sign up now for the OHRV Training Course at the National Guard Armory in West Franklin. The course will begin at 8:00 am. New Year's Luncheon Celebration December 29th Join the TRIP Center for a wonderful luncheon at 11:30 a.m. of pork loin with apple slices, whipped potatoes, veggies, rolls, and ice cream sundaes for dessert. After lunch we will enjoy a champagne toast and make our own New Year's resolutions. Special Bingo game to follow. ROUTINE MONTHLY EVENTS… Adult Recreation December 5, 12, 19 & 25 Adult Recreation will meet on Mondays from 6:30pm - 7:30pm beginning October 17 at the Franklin Recreation Center. This program encourages socialization as well as physical activities for adults with special needs. This is an on-going program with a one time fee of $10.00 for Franklin residents and $15.00 for non-residents. Open Basketball December 7, 14, 21 & 28 Any adult (18 years and older) interested in playing pick-up basketball games is welcome to the Franklin Recreation Center from 7:30pm - 9:00pm on Wednesdays beginning October 19. This is an on-going program with a one time fee of $10.00 for Franklin residents and $15.00 for non-residents. Adult Volleyball December 4, 11 & 18 Any adult (18 years and older) interested in playing pick-up volleyball is welcome to the Franklin Recreation Center on Sunday evenings from 5:00pm - 6:30pm beginning October 16. This is an on-going program with a one time fee of $10.00 for Franklin residents and $15.00 for non-residents. Old Timer's Basketball December 4, 11 & 18 Individuals forty years of age and older are welcome to participate in open basketball nights. The Franklin Recreation Center is open on Sunday evenings from 6:30pm - 8:30pm and Wednesday evenings (until October 19) for pick-up basketball games. This is an on-going program with a one time of $10.00 for Franklin residents and $15.00 for non-residents. Support Groups are where caregivers can come together for peer support, resource information, creative problem solving, and understanding. Please contact Betty Arsenault at The Arches 286-4077 for additional information. The meetings are held on the last Wednesday of the month from 6 pm -7 pm. The next meeting will be on October 26. Light refreshments will be served. Franklin Heritage Commission December Heritage Commission will have its monthly meeting Thursday, 6:00 pm on the 2nd floor of City Hall. Please come to learn or help out. We are looking for additional commissioners. The Education Series Support Group December 23 The Education Series/Support Group will meet the 4th Wednesday of the month at 6 p.m. and is free and open to the public. Bus to Concord December 5, 12, 19 & 26 The TRIP (Twin Rivers Intergenerational Program) at the corner of Smith and Canal Streets in downtown Franklin (across from Franklin Savings Bank) coordinates a bus into Concord every Monday. Franklin City Council Meeting December 5 The Franklin community is always welcome at the Franklin City Council Meetings, typically the first Monday of each month. Meetings are held at 7:00 pm in Council Chamber of Franklin City Hall, otherwise known as the Franklin Opera House. This meeting will feature a preview of the new Choose Franklin Promotional Video! Everyone is invited to attend. Pokeno December 5, 12, 19 & 26 The TRIP (Twin Rivers Intergenerational Program) at the corner of Smith and Canal Streets in downtown Franklin (across from Franklin Savings Bank) has a Pokeno game every Monday at 12:15 p.m. Stop by and join the fun! HICEAS (Health Insurance Counseling Education Assistance Service) December 6 & 20 Do you have questions about your Medicare Coverage? Would you like free and confidential assistance determining your health insurance needs? Are you confused or overwhelmed by all of the Medicare paperwork? Do you know what to do if you can't afford to pay the Medicare deductibles and co-insurance? Old Time Radio December 7, 14, 21 & 28 Join the TRIP Center for a new weekly program beginning on Wednesdays at 12:15 p.m. Listen to cassettes of all the old radio shows like The Shadow, Lights Out, and The Inner Sanctum Mysteries. We also have an extensive collection of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and more. This will bring back great memories for some people and we encourage people who have never heard the classic radio shows to join us too! Refreshments will be served and this is open to the public. A big thank you to Kathryn Patten for donating all of these wonderful cassettes. We certainly will enjoy them! Circle of Parents December 7, 14, 21 & 28 Circle of Parents is a parenting support group that meets every Wednesday from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the Franklin United Methodist Church at 88 Franklin St. in Franklin. The group is designed to encourage parent leadership and develop parenting skills in a non-judgmental and supportive atmosphere. Moderated by a skilled facilitator, the group follows the national model of "sharing ideas, sharing support" where topics of discussion can be anything related to raising kids, such as discipline techniques, school behaviors and performance, youth culture and health and safety. Parents decide the topics, lead the discussions and are involved with group decision-making. The support group is free and childcare is provided. Choose Franklin December 1 Are you interested in being a part of a very active group of community-minded residents, business leaders, city officials, and civic group members to improve the economic, social and civic life in Franklin? Franklin Planning Board Meeting December 28 The monthly meeting of the Franklin Planning Board takes place the fourth Wednesday of each month in the Franklin City Council Chambers at 7:00 p.m., otherwise known as the Franklin Opera House. Mark Your Calendar Now For Great Upcoming Events! New Year's Day Kayaking January 1 New Year's Day Kayaking on the Winnipesaukee and First Day - Franklin are two of our community's biggest events! Watch paddlers from all over New England as they arrive in Franklin at the site of the new Trestle View Park. More information to come! Trip to Boston Bruins' Hockey Game January 2 The Franklin Parks and Recreation Department will be taking a trip to the Fleet Center for the Boston Bruins vs. Philadelphia Flyers game on Monday, January 2nd. The game begins at 1:00pm and the bus will be departing from the Franklin Recreation Center at 10:00am. Monday, December 19th is the registration deadline for the trip. The cost for this trip is $40.00 (which includes coach bus transportation and game ticket). We will be taking a maximum of 50 individuals; children twelve and under must be accompanied by an adult. Free Income Tax Preparation Beginning January 28 The Franklin Asset Building Coalition will again be offering free income tax return preparation be IRS-certified volunteers, this year adding a second location. We will once again be at the TRIP Center, Saturdays from 9-3 from January 28-February 11, 2006 (!) and will also be at the Jennie Blake Elementary School in Hill on Monday February 6 & February 13 from 3-6 PM. Call 934-3315 to schedule an appointment. 11th Annual Lakes Region Snowmobile Club Radar Runs January 29th Join us for the 11th Annual Lakes Region Snowmobile Club (LRSC) Radar Runs at Webster Lake in West Franklin. This is a fun event, perfect for the entire family! Races begin at 10:30 am. For more information, call Alan Carignan at 496-6146 or Steve Proulx at 934-2170. New England Sled Dog Club Races February 4 and 5 Join the New England Sled Dog Club on February 4th & 5th, 2006 at the Profile Falls/Franklin Falls Dam area. This event is a two day Sprint race with 4-dog, 6-dog, 8-dog and unlimited classes, ski-jor 1+2 dog, 1 + 3 dog Junior divisions as well. The races start at 9:00 am and run until 5:00. There are typically 15 min. breaks between classes and dogs run all day long. Last year's event brought 78 teams running and a capacity crowd at the start/finish line, Profile Falls. The Corp of Engineers and the New England Dog Sled Club are hosting this event with help from The lakes region snowmobile club. The Lions Club will be on hand as a food vendor. Trip to Boston Celtics Basketball Game February 10 The Franklin Parks and Recreation Department will be taking a trip to the Fleet Center for the Boston Celtics vs. Portland Trail Blazers game on Friday, February 10th. The game will be starting at 7:30pm and the bus will be departing from the Franklin Recreation Center at 4:30pm. The registration deadline is January 6th, and a maximum of 50 individuals will be accepted. Cost for this trip is $45.00 (which includes coach bus transportation and a ticket for lower level seating ?section 15 and 16?), and must be paid in full by January 6th. After January 6th no refunds will be allowed and tickets will no longer be held. Children twelve and under must be accompanied by an adult. The New Hampshire Film and Television Office have received an inquiry for a location from a commercial production company out of New York. The production company is gearing up to produce a commercial for Wolverine Boots and is looking for a "rustic cabin that sits on the shore of a lake or pond and is surrounded by forest, or if no body of water is available, the lodge can be nestled in the forest." (The company specified a "pine forest") The company would like to bring their 10-12 person crew to the location for 2 days of filming sometime in December. Help the Winnipesaukee Trail Association by purchasing a brick for the commemorative walkway through Trestle View Park. The bricks you buy will be engraved with your inscription, up to three lines of 14 characters each. You may purchase bricks in your name or to honor a family member, friend or loved one. Engraved bricks may be purchased for $50 each. Blank bricks are available for $10 each. Bricks will be laid twice a year. The Franklin Parks and Recreation Department is holding an open volleyball night. This program meets Sundays from 5:00pm-6:30pm at the Franklin Recreation Center, and is open to anyone 18 years of age or older. This program is an on-going program with a one time fee of $10.00 (Resident) / $15.00 (Non-Resident). Mondays, beginning November 21st and ending February 13th, the Franklin Recreation Center will open the gym, exclusively for children ages 1-5 only, from 10:00am-11:00am. This program allows parents a place to bring their children to play during the winter months. This is an open gym, and will have no instructor; parents must supervise their own children. Balls, mats, and mini hoops will be provide for children to play with. Program Fee: $20.00 (Resident) / $30.00 (Non-Resident). The Veterans Memorial Ski Area is gearing up for a great ski season! Other Community Events Seeking Volunteers: Once again the TRIP Center is collecting warm scarves, hats, and mittens for school children. Through a combined effort between the Bessie Rowell School and the TRIP Center Craft Group, the Busy Hands, baskets for newborns will be given to the Franklin Regional Hospital. Bessie Rowell has invited area seniors to put hand knitted booties, bonnets or blankets in the baskets they are making. The school is going to put books in the new baskets to let new moms and dads know the importance of reading to their child. Chem-Free Planning Committee is seeking parents and community members interested in helping to plan the Fourth Annual Chem-Free After Prom Party. Any adults interested in providing Franklin High School students with a safe, supervised, fun place to spend time with each other on one of the most dangerous nights of the year for young people are urged to attend. The meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month at 6:00pm at the Franklin High School library.
