Into the Mixed Paper bin, you can also put ordinary paper, newspapers, magazines, and phone books. Three cheer teams and one football team from the Franklin-Tilton Falcons won or placed at regional competitions and playoffs the last weekend in November! These great kids, ranging in age from 10 to 15 years old, have worked very hard and earned the privilege to represent the Franklin/Tilton area at national football playoffs and cheer competition in Miami. For those of you who aren’t familiar with this organization – The Franklin-Tilton Falcons Football and Cheer Association (formerly Pop Warner, now American Youth Football) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that has been active in the lives of the kids of Franklin and the surrounding area for more than 30 years. The organization stresses good sportsmanship, discipline, community involvement, and building self confidence in the children they serve. Every child is allowed to participate regardless of their skill level. There are no tryouts for the any of the teams and all participants play a minimum number of plays in every game. No one is left out. We need your help. Sending 80 to 100 kids and coaches to Miami isn’t easy and the fact that Nationals take place December 3-10 means that we have to come up with a large amount of money in a very, very short time. We estimate that we need to raise somewhere in the area of $55,000. The kids, parents and others have been fundraising for the past several weeks and will continue those efforts (even the kids, siblings, and coaches from the teams who didn’t qualify have been working) but we are still a long way from being able to send everyone. We are asking all individuals, organizations and businesses in the area to help out. ANYTHING you can contribute would be greatly appreciated. Donations can be sent to P.O. Box 52, Franklin or you can pass them on to Linda Lafever. Anyone who donates will be sent a tax letter for proof of donation before the end of the year. These kids are excellent examples of everything that makes Franklin great. It would be great if we as a community would show our belief in them and help them reach their goals through our generosity and support. If you have any questions please email Linda Lafever at ljlafever@metrocast.net or call me at 934-4127.
The Franklin Rotary Christmas Tree Sale is going on now, until the trees are sold out. Visit us at Smitty’s Town Line Plaza, Tilton.
The Franklin Outing Club is hoping to reopen the Veterans' Memorial Ski Area this winter after a disappointing season of not enough snow last year. This volunteer group would welcome new members and other assistance from interested persons. As supervisor of the Ski School, I would love some help in instructing young children how to ski. The ski school will take place the four Saturdays in January from 10 to 11. Volunteers do not need to be able to ski, since we also need help catching young children as they slide down the hill and also hauling them back up the hill (a good cardiovascular workout!). I welcome responsible students as instructors too, if you know of any. Many high school students need credit for community service to graduate and I think we can probably help them attain a few hours towards that goal. If interested in helping out, please call me, Donna Gilbreth, at 934-4299. The ski area is looking for volunteer assistance in other areas too. We run a food grill to sell drinks and burgers, etc. to hungry skiiers. They always need some help. Ski patrol and general maintenance are other areas of need. Again, if interested in helping out you can contact my husband Roy Gilbreth, who is probably the returning FOC president this year, at 934-4299. By the way, membership in the Franklin Outing Club is a mere $5 and family ski passes are a bargain, well under $200 for the season. Day rates for skiing are only $10 (adults) and $6 (kids) [at least I think that's the rate this year!!]
Beck & Bellucci will erect the Christmas tree in Scott Marceau Memorial Park in time for the December 1st Franklin tree lighting. The tree this year comes from the Hurst’s property; unfortunately this is the last tree of adequate size that they have available. During this upcoming year they will be looking for someone to donate a tree for the 2007 holiday season. If anyone has a tree they would like to donate they can call Beck & Bellucci at 934-5236... Location and size of the tree will determine if it can be used for the tree lighting. Once a suitable tree is found, Beck & Bellucci will take care of the work to move the tree and erect it in the park.
