NEW EVENTS THIS MONTH

Artists on the Trail
October 1
Friends of the Northern Rail Trail - Merrimack County will be sponsoring ARTISTS ON THE trAIL, an exhibition and silent auction to be held at the Andover Elementary Middle School in Andover, NH. The event will include a 5K footrace and bicycle raffle. Refreshments will be served. For additional information go to the Friends of the Northern Rail Trail website at www.fnrt.org.

Trip to Suffolk Downs

Free Intro to Computers Class

Annual New England Boiled Dinner

On Saturday, Oct 7, the Franklin United Methodist Church, 88 Franklin St, will serve their annual New England Boiled Dinner. Dinner will be served from 5:00 to 6:30 pm. Adults - $8.00; Children under age 12 - $3.00. Dinner will include:  Corned beef or Ham, vegetables, salad, hot rolls & dessert. This event has been held annually over  80 years.

Pampering for a Purpose: Breast Cancer Awareness and Education Event

Lights On After School
October 12
The Franklin Celebrates program will join more than 7,500 sites nationwide participating in "Lights On After School!"  on Thursday, October 12.  This national celebration of the value that after school programs bring to communities will be commemorated in Franklin with games, exhibits, and a community supper to be held at Franklin Middle School.  Parents and youth are invited to attend the activities that have the theme, "Keep Kids Safe, Help Working Families, Inspire Learning".  The event will be held from 4-6 p.m.  Downtown merchants are asked to keep their own lights on during that time.  Students from Franklin Celebrates will be distributing hand-colored paper light bulbs to place in store windows prior to the event.  Franklin Celebrates' Lights on After School event  is supported in part by a grant from the NH Dept. of Education 21st Century Community Learning Center grant.

Octoberfest
October 12
At 10:30 am the trIP Center will begin the celebration with live entertainment. Stay for a hearty autumn lunch consisting of apple cider, beef stew, cornbread, salad, and pumpkin pie. After the meal we will have a fall themed afternoon of BINGO. Contact the trIP Center for more information.

Christmas Tree Shop
October 13
Come join the trIP Center for a trip to the Christmas Tree Shop. We always have a great time. We will enjoy lunch at a nearby restaurant. Don’t you just love a bargain? Sign up at the trIP Center as seats will go fast. Transportation costs $8.00 and will depart the center at 9:00 am, lunch is your responsibility.

Banjo Dan and the Mid-Nite Plowboys

Since 1972, this band has become one of the most respected acoustic bands in the Northeast, with an outstanding repertoire of fiddle and banjo tunes, bluegrass, spirituals, and folk and country ballads. Seventh Annual Walk to Fight Cancer
October 14
Join us for a walk to fight cancer and provide aid and/or support to individuals and/or their families who are battling cancer and live in the greater Plymouth, NH area, and to the families of those who have succumbed to the disease. The walk is scheduled for October 14. Walk begins at noon and ends at midnight (Registration 11 a.m. to Noon) at the Plymouth State University PE Center (Field House) on Holderness Road in Holderness. Raise $50 and receive a Walk to Fight Cancer 2006 T-shirt. Purchase a “luminary” (a decorative candle that lights the pathway of walkers) for $5.00. Leaf Peeping Up North
October 16
Join the trIP Center for a scenic foliage trip. We will travel to Lincoln and Woodstock stopping along the way to see the beautiful colors of fall. There will be a picnic lunch along the way. $8.00 covers the cost of the transportation and picnic. Bus will depart the Center at 9:00 am.

Japanese Fabric Dyed Ornaments
October 17
trIP Center Program Assistant, Sarah Cote, will be a guest teacher for the Busy Hands Crafting Group. Sarah will show the group how to do Shibori Japanese fabric dyeing, which is a stitch resistant method of submersion dying. Participants will turn the beautiful fabric into holiday ornaments. This is a great way to create some lovely gifts and to enjoy the company of fellow artists and crafters. Classes will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:30-11:30 am until the end of November. Highland Lake Inn Hosts Business After Hours

Nestled amongst picturesque barns, gorgeous fields, and old New England farmhouses, the Highland Lake Inn is the perfect place to spend a crisp autumn night. Join Pecco and Gail Beaufays as they host the Greater Franklin Chamber of Commerce for an evening of Business After Hours, Wednesday, October 18th at the Highland Lake Inn in East Andover from 5:30 to 7:00 pm. Eve Slawsky will be coming to the trIP center to talk to people about Winterization. There are many affordable things that one can do to get their homes and selves ready for the cold winter weather ahead. There will be time to meet one-on-one with Eve if there are other topics you would like addressed afterwards. Stop by to learn something new and get you questions answered about community assistance for Seniors. Discussion will begin at 10:30 am.

Mystery Lunch

Always a good time, the trIP Center Mystery Lunch is a fun way to share a great meal with friends. No one knows where the meal will be, but we know that it will be a good time- so come along. Transportation is $4.00 and the cost of lunch is your responsibility. Bus to depart at 10:00 am.

Foxwoods Casino
October 25
Spend the day at one of the world’s largest casinos.  In addition to gambling there is lots of shopping, sight seeing, and dining to be enjoyed. The bus will depart the trIP Center at 7:00 am and will return at 7pm. The cost of $30.00 per person includes transportation, and the bonus package in place. Sign up early because we need 35 people in order to go. Payment for this trip is due by Friday, October 20th. To attend any trIP Center event, sign up at the Center at least 5 days prior to trip. Cabaret
October 26 - 28
This musical, made famous by Joel Grey and Liza Minnelli, a co-production of Franklin Footlight Theatre and the Franklin Opera House, will get your body swaying and tug at your heart. All shows will be held at the Franklin Opera House, downtown Franklin and will begin at 8:00 pm. Tickets are $8.00 to $10.00. Community Halloween Party
October 28
It’s that time again, time for the fun-filled Community Halloween Party! This year’s events include face painting, cookie decorating, craft tables, a pumpkin decorating contest, Halloween stories, and more. There will be goody bags, refreshments, and a great time to be had. Kids get to keep everything they make. Children 11 years old and under are invited to come accompanied by an adult. Party will begin at 1:00 pm. We are looking for volunteers. If you would like to help make this year’s party the best yet please call Nancy at 934-4151. ATTENTION SENIORS: The trIP Center needs volunteers to run the craft tables. We could also use someone to help with face painting and the refreshment table. If you have an idea for a Halloween craft and would like to create it with the children let us know.

Annie and the Orphans
October 28
The New Hampshire Veterans Home and Belmont Rotary Club present Annie & The Orphans to entertain at the first ‘Servicemen‘s Club-Remember When‘ event Saturday October 28th from 6-11pm at Pheasant Ridge Country Club in Gilford. This event is open to everyone. Tickets are $25 each with proceeds benefiting the New Hampshire Veterans Home Benefit Fund and the Belmont Rotary Charities. Call 527-4400 for more information.

Annual Monster Dash Road Race
October 29
The annual Monster Dash 5K road race, presented by the students and faculty of Tilton School takes place Sunday October 29th at 1pm. Registration starts at noon. There‘ll be fun activities on the Tilton School campus for the entire family! Check back here for more information. Proceeds from the 10th annual fundraiser will benefit the Tilton/Northfield/Sanbornton Youth Assistance Program and the Bread & Roses Soup Kitchen.

Franklin Zoning Board of Adjustment

The Franklin Zoning Board meets the first Wednesday of every month in the City Council Chambers, also known as the Franklin Opera House, beginning at 7:00 p.m. The public is always welcome. Should you have questions, please contact Dick Lewis or Angela Carey at 934-2341.

Franklin City Council Meeting
October 1
The Franklin community is always welcome at the Franklin City Council Meetings, typically the first Monday of each month.  Meetings are held at 7:00 pm in Council Chamber of Franklin City Hall, otherwise known as the Franklin Opera House.

Franklin School Board Meeting
October 15
All are welcome to attend the monthly meeting of the Franklin School Board.  Meetings are held the third Monday of each month in the Franklin High School Library at 7:00 p.m. For a copy of the agenda prior to the meeting, stop by the SAU #18 Office on the Franklin High School campus.  Your attendance and input is welcome and encouraged!

Franklin Planning Board Meeting

The monthly meeting of the Franklin Planning Board takes place the fourth Wednesday of each month in the Franklin City Council Chambers at 7:00 p.m., otherwise known as the Franklin Opera House.

Franklin Heritage Commission

Heritage Commission will have its monthly meeting the second Thursday of every month at 6:00 pm on the 2nd floor of the Franklin Public Library. Please come to learn or help out. If you would like to hear about the proposed Franklin Historic District, or help save the history and heritage of Franklin please attend our meeting or leave a message about your interest at 934-3900.

Rotary Club

Franklin Historical Society

PLEASE NOTE THE DAY and SUBJECT CHANGE!! Due to a conflict with the Opera House's fundraiser "Taste of Fall" at the Mojalaki on Thursday, 6:30 pm to 8:30 on the 5th, The Franklin Historical Society is holding its meeting the day before, so members can attend both events (for tickets to the Wine and Chocolate Tasting call the Opera House at 934-1901 or Judy Palfrey 934-6025). The Historical Society meeting will be held at its usual place, upstairs in the Franklin Library at 7:00 pm (enter through the rear and take the elevator to the top floor) Due to the previously scheduled speaker's unavailability, Joan Young, the Society's longtime secretary, will present a slideshow of views of Franklin's past, going as far back as the flood of 1936, including several pictures of historic buildings lost to fire, demolition, or disaster. Free parking behind the Opera House/City Hall and no admission charge. Everyone is welcome.

“Make the Move” Three Rivers Walking Club

Looking for a fun way to “fall” into fitness? Join the Three Rivers Walking Club for Saturday morning walks in October. Meet at the beautiful new Trestle View Park in downtown Franklin and walk the Winnipesaukee River Trail to Cross Mill Road and back. Walks begin promptly at 8:30am. Wear comfortable walking shoes and dress in layers! Join Mix 94.1 FM’s radio personality Fred Caruso on Saturday, October 7th as he leads the walk! Adult Volleyball

Any adult (18 years and older) interested in playing pick-up volleyball is welcome to the Franklin Recreation Center on Sunday evenings from 5:00pm – 6:30pm.  This is an on-going program with a one time fee of $10.00 for Franklin residents and $15.00 for non-residents.
 
Old Timer’s Basketball
October 7, 14, 21 & 28
Individuals forty years of age and older are welcome to participate in open basketball nights.  The Franklin Recreation Center is open on Sunday evenings from 6:30pm – 8:30pm for pick-up basketball games.  This is an on-going program with a one time of $10.00 for Franklin residents and $15.00 for non-residents. Circle of Parents
October 3, 10, 17, 24 & 31
Circle of Parents is a parenting support group that meets every Wednesday from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the Franklin United Methodist Church at 88 Franklin St. in Franklin.  The group is designed to encourage parent leadership and develop parenting skills in a non-judgmental and supportive atmosphere. Moderated by a skilled facilitator, the group follows the national model of "sharing ideas, sharing support" where topics of discussion can be anything related to raising kids, such as discipline techniques, school behaviors and performance, youth culture and health and safety. Parents decide the topics, lead the discussions and are involved with group decision-making. The support group is free and childcare is provided.  Anyone seeking information about this group should call Joan Valk at 934-4885.

“Taking Life in Control” Support Group

“Taking Life in Control” is a support group for cancer survivors or anyone who is dealing with the diagnosis of cancer. Family, friends and new participants are always welcome. Join the trIP Center for a new weekly program beginning on Wednesdays at 12:15 p.m. Listen to cassettes of all the old radio shows like The Shadow, Lights Out, and The Inner Sanctum Mysteries. We also have an extensive collection of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and more. This will bring back great memories for some people and we encourage people who have never heard the classic radio shows to join us too! Refreshments will be served and this is open to the public.

Winnipesaukee Trail Walks (With Nancy and Sarah)

Come enjoy a bit of exercise and walk along the beautiful Winnipesaukee Trail every Wednesday beginning at 10:00 am. If you’ve never walked on the trail it is quite lovely along the river. The Experience Three Rivers monthly newsletter is more popular than ever! The newsletter is now received by over 500 households each month and the number of event submissions is increasing rapidly. In response to some comments that we have received into the office and in the interest of keeping the newsletter informative and easy to read, beginning in January 2007 we will no longer print Recurring Events each month. We ask that any businesses, town/city governments, or other civic organizations that have recurring meetings submit them to the Chamber office by December 1st for permanent placement on our website. The Franklin Senior Center provides... A nutritious midday meal at 11:30 a.m. Monday through Friday (There is a $2.00 requested donation), Meals on Wheels to homebound seniors and individuals with disabilities, Senior transportation on our wheelchair accessible Community Action Program bus Monday through Friday (Door-to-door service is available upon request), Fellowships, information, entertainment, learning opportunities and much more. We are a ServiceLink satellite office providing information and referrals on issues related to aging, chronic illness, and disabilities. We are available to assist you with your needs. SEEKING VOLUNTEERS

The trIP Center is looking for someone who would be willing to teach a gentle yoga class twice a month at the Center. Please call Sarah or Nancy at 934-4151.

The VNA of Franklin will be holding a hospice volunteer training course, starting on September 5th and running for six consecutive Tuesdays through October 10th. Classes will be held at the VNA office on 75 Chestnut Street from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Hospice volunteers enhance the quality of life for those receiving hospice care.  Please call Linda at 934-3454 for more information or to register for the training.

The Twin Rivers Interfaith Food Pantry (trIFP) needs your help!!! Currently, the pantry in need of funds to help continue operations and meet the needs of our community. We fed 13,503 meals in the month of February 2006. We average approximately 12,000 meals each month throughout the year serving eight communities, Andover, Danbury, Franklin, Hill, Northfield, Salisbury, Sanbornton and Tilton. We purchase the food by the pound from the New Hampshire Food Bank through donations and are blessed to have USDA food and donations from Hannaford. We have never turned away a family in need, from any area, without food and a telephone number of a Food Pantry located in the area in which they live.The Twin Rivers Food Pantry is supported strictly through generous donations, of funds, time, talents, resources and prayers. We are very fortunate to have friends and benefactors willing to come together with mutual respect and a purposeful vision of feeding the hungry. Please feel welcome at any time to come and visit the trIFP. We welcome any visitors and welcome ideas and suggestions. Our hours of operation by volunteers only are; Tuesday and Thursday from 9:00 am to 11:00 am and Wednesdays from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. We are located at Central Street at the St Jude’s Church (the brown building across from the public library).
