New Events
Bereavement Support Group September 1 The VNA of Franklin’s Hospice Program will be providing a Bereavement Support Group on six consecutive Thursday afternoons in September and October. The initial session will be on September 7th and they will run through October 12th from 3:30 to 5:00 PM. All sessions will take place at the VNA office at 75 Chestnut Street in Franklin and will be facilitated by Betsy Burns, LICSW, Hospice Medical Social Worker and Rev. Scott Secrest, Hospice Chaplain. Free Blood Pressure Clinics September 1 - 26 The Franklin Visiting Nurse Association holds a number of free blood pressure clinics during September. The next one is: Friday September 1st from 11-Noon at Franklin Savings Bank‘s downtown office; Tuesday September 5th at the Belknap Mall, Belmont from 10-11am; Thursday September 7th, Salisbury Town Hall, 11:15-Noon; Thursday September 21st, 11-Noon at the Pines Community Center in Northfield; Tuesday September 26th, 10:30-11:30am, TRIP Center in Downtown Franklin. Hopkinton State Fair September 1 Join the TRIP Center as they venture to the Hopkinton State Fair, one of the state’s oldest and best fairs. Senior Citizens pay $7.00 to get in at the gate. Transportation will cost $1.00 and will depart the center at 9:00 am. Bring money for a traditional state fair lunch. There is so much to do and see…you won’t want to miss it. Sign up soon as space is limited on the bus. To attend any TRIP Center event, sign up at the Center at least 5 days prior to trip. If there is a cost for the event, it will be due at time of sign up. Walk with the Mayor of Franklin! September 2 Join the “Make the Move” Three Rivers Walking Club for a walk on the Piney Point Nature Trail at Franklin Falls Dam on Saturday, September 2nd at 8:30am led by Mayor Dave Palfrey of Franklin. The walk will begin in at the kiosk at the parking area for the Franklin Falls Dam off of route 127 in Franklin. Walking is free and everyone is invited to attend! 17th Annual End of Summer Blues Dance Party September 2 On Saturday September 2nd, check out the 17th annual ‘End of Summer‘ Blues dance party at the Knights of Columbus Hall, Route 3-A in Bristol at 8pm. Gile Family Event September 2 Descendants of the Gile family of Canterbury, Northfield, and Franklin will be celebrating a special commemorative event on Saturday, September 2nd. The event will be held at 40 Gile Road, site of the Gile homestead, a noted property occupied by three generations of the family from 1789 to 1904. The house was recently reacquired by John L. Gile of Los Angeles, California. Mr. Gile will be hosting the special dinner program and a brunch and golf game the following day, Sunday, September 3rd. The Saturday event will be held from 3:00 to 9:00 p.m. and will include a special unveiling of a 13 star United States flag that belonged to William Augustus Gile. Mr. Gile was born in Franklin and was featured in a special issue of the Granite Monthly. The story, which was handed down by generations of family members, inspired John Gile to search for the homestead and eventually purchase it. The original 400 acre property remained intact until 2001. Classes will be held at the VNA office on 75 Chestnut Street from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Hospice volunteers enhance the quality of life for those receiving hospice care. Pines Community Center Soccer Program September 9 The Pines Community Center in Northfield is now accepting registrations for its traveling soccer teams. WRHS Car Wash September 9 The Winnisquam Regional High School soccer team will hold a car wash Saturday September 9th from 9am-1pm at Daniels Artesian Wells, Route 3 in Winnisquam. Proceeds benefit the soccer program.

Riverfront Park Dedication September 9 A dedication for Riverfront Park is scheduled for Saturday, September 9th beginning at 1:00 pm. North Country Notebook columnist John Harrigan will be the guest speaker and Jim Clements, headmaster of the Tilton School will be the master of ceremonies. A shuttle will run from Winnisquam Regional High School to transport attendees. Starbucks coffee, apple pie, and vanilla ice cream will be served to everyone in attendance. Voting Accessibility September 12 Laurel Colson from Granite State Independent Living will be at the TRIP Center beginning at 10:30 to speak about the new accessibility voting system. Old Print Barn Excursion September 18 Join the TRIP Center as they travel to the Old Print Barn, a lovely Civil War period barn that has been scrubbed and redecorated to serve as a 21st century art gallery. The gallery specialized in quality New Hampshire etchings and engravings and housing hundreds of rare prints. Whether you are serious collector or a tourist you will certainly enjoy this trip. The Old Print Barn is located in Meredith on the other side of Lake Wakeman. Enjoy the scenic ride with lunch at one of the many excellent restaurants in Meredith. Hands on Nutrition September 20 Come join the TRIP Center for a six-week program in connection with the Merrimack County Cooperative Extension Nutrition Connections Program. This six week program will cover the basics of senior nutrition starting with Healthy Eating for your age and activity level. Each week will cover a new topic and will include new recipes and foods to make and taste. Elizabeth Martin is a Food & Nutrition Program Associate with UNH Cooperative Extension and offers a variety of food and nutrition programs and home visiting opportunities to low-income individuals and families. NHVH Memorial Walk September 24 The Alzheimer’s Association, the world leader in Alzheimer research and support, is the first and largest volunteer health organization dedicated to finding prevention methods, treatments, and an eventual cure for Alzheimer’s. For 25 years, the donor-supported, not-for-profit Alzheimer’s Association has provided reliable information and care consultation; created supportive services; increased funding for dementia research; and influenced public policy changes. The organization’s mission is to eliminate Alzheimer’s disease through the advancement of research,; to provide and enhance care and support for all affected; to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health, and create a world without Alzheimer’s disease. The New Hampshire Veterans Homes’ Alzheimer’s Memorial Walk will be on the 24th this year. Let’s get a group together to walk. Car Seat Check-Up Event September 30 Four out of five car seats are installed incorrectly. Do you know if your child is riding safely? Find out at an upcoming Car Seat Check up Event sponsored by LRGHealthcare, Safe Kids of NH, and the Tanger Outlet Center in Tilton, NH. Join us on Saturday, September 30 from 10am until 2pm in the Tanger Outlet Center parking lot for an opportunity to have your child’s car seat checked for correct installation. Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians will be on hand to complete the inspections and also to answer any questions that parents and caregivers may have. Inspections are done on a first come first serve basis and take about a half hour to complete. This is a free of charge service and all are welcome to attend. Franklin Zoning Board of Adjustment September 6 The Franklin Zoning Board meets the first Wednesday of every month in the City Council Chambers, also known as the Franklin Opera House, beginning at 7:00 p.m. The public is always welcome. Franklin City Council Meeting September 11 Plan NH results will be presented this meeting of the Franklin City Council. For those of you that missed the Plan NH forum in June and those that want another look, now is your opportunity. The Plan NH team leader will be the presenter. The Franklin community is always welcome at the Franklin City Council Meetings, typically the first Monday of each month. Meetings are held at 7:00 pm in Council Chamber of Franklin City Hall, otherwise known as the Franklin Opera House.
Franklin School Board Meeting September 18 All are welcome to attend the monthly meeting of the Franklin School Board. Meetings are held the third Monday of each month in the Franklin High School Library at 7:00 p.m. For a copy of the agenda prior to the meeting, stop by the SAU #18 Office on the Franklin High School campus. Franklin Planning Board Meeting September 27 The monthly meeting of the Franklin Planning Board takes place the fourth Wednesday of each month in the Franklin City Council Chambers at 7:00 p.m., otherwise known as the Franklin Opera House.
Franklin Heritage Commission September 14 Heritage Commission will have its monthly meeting the second Thursday of every month at 6:00 pm on the 2nd floor of the Franklin Public Library. Franklin Historical Society September 7 Join the Franklin Historical Society on Thursday, September 7, at 7 pm, in the upstairs meeting room of the Franklin Library (park behind the Opera House and use the library rear door and elevator), the Franklin Historical Society is proud to host Bill Veillette, Executive Director of the NH Historical Society, to speak about "Researching the History of Your Old House". Bill lives in the Col. Means house in Amherst, NH, where Franklin Pierce was married in the living room. Using the techniques he has employed to find out more about his own house, Bill lecture reveals many useful tips in revealing the secrets of a dwelling's past. Circle of Parents September 6, 13, 20 & 27 Circle of Parents is a parenting support group that meets every Wednesday from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the Franklin United Methodist Church at 88 Franklin St. in Franklin. The group is designed to encourage parent leadership and develop parenting skills in a non-judgmental and supportive atmosphere. Moderated by a skilled facilitator, the group follows the national model of "sharing ideas, sharing support" where topics of discussion can be anything related to raising kids, such as discipline techniques, school behaviors and performance, youth culture and health and safety. Parents decide the topics, lead the discussions and are involved with group decision-making. The support group is free and childcare is provided. “Taking Life in Control” Support Group September 6 & 20 “Taking Life in Control” is a support group for cancer survivors or anyone who is dealing with the diagnosis of cancer. Family, friends and new participants are always welcome. No advance registration is necessary. Caring Caregivers Support Group September 6 & 20 “Caring Caregivers” Support Groups are for caregivers of the memory-impaired and others meet at the Northfield Pines Community Center from 1:00 to 2:30 pm on the first and third Wednesday of each month. Agile Up! September 5, 7, 12, 14, 19, 21, 26 & 28 Agile Up! meets at the TRIP Center on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:45 to 9:45 a.m. The cost of the 6-week program is $30.00 ($2.50 per class) due at registration. Old Time Radio September 6, 13, 20 & 27 Join the TRIP Center for a new weekly program beginning on Wednesdays at 12:15 p.m. Listen to cassettes of all the old radio shows like The Shadow, Lights Out, and The Inner Sanctum Mysteries. We also have an extensive collection of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and more. This will bring back great memories for some people and we encourage people who have never heard the classic radio shows to join us too! Refreshments will be served and this is open to the public.
Winnipesaukee Trail Walks (With Nancy and Sarah) September 6, 13, 20 & 27 Come enjoy a bit of exercise and walk along the beautiful Winnipesaukee Trail every Wednesday beginning at 10:00 am. If you’ve never walked on the trail it is quite lovely along the river. Come and bring a friend. We will meet at the Trestle Park lot. Story time at the Franklin Public Library August 1, 3, 8, 11, 15, 17, 22, 24, 29 & 31 Story time at the Library will take place on Tuesday, August 1, 8, 15, 22, 29 at 9:30 AM and also, Thursday, August 3, 10, 17, 24, and 31 at 10:30 AM. Come join us and discover the many exciting and fun stories in our large picture book collection. The Children's Librarian will read some stories and we will make a craft project afterwards. Artists on the Trail October 1 Friends of the Northern Rail Trail - Merrimack County will be sponsoring ARTISTS ON THE TRAIL, an exhibition and silent auction to be held at the Andover Elementary Middle School in Andover, NH. Seventh Annual Walk to Fight Cancer October 14 Join us for a walk to fight cancer and provide aid and/or support to individuals and/or their families who are battling cancer and live in the greater Plymouth, NH area, and to the families of those who have succumbed to the disease. The walk is scheduled for October 14. Walk begins at noon and ends at midnight (Registration 11 a.m. to Noon) at the Plymouth State University PE Center (Field House) on Holderness Road in Holderness. Raise $50 and receive a Walk to Fight Cancer 2006 T-shirt. Purchase a “luminary” (a decorative candle that lights the pathway of walkers) for $5.00. Annual Monster Dash Road Race October 29 The annual Monster Dash 5K road race, presented by the students and faculty of Tilton School takes place Sunday October 29th at 1pm. “If Walls Could Talk” the weekly series, Sundays on HGTV, is coming to the New Hampshire area to film homes with intriguing pasts and unusual stories. Now in production on its 8th season, the series kicks off with new homeowners who make surprising historical discoveries about their homes as they explore and restore them. A lucky few will be amazed to learn that the historic artifacts they’ve discovered are worth a fortune when the “If Walls Could Talk” appraiser drops by for a look. Each half-hour episode features homeowners from across the country who share their amazing discoveries. If Walls Could Talk is produced for HGTV by High Noon Entertainment in Denver, CO. Kate Cusick has been appointed family support specialist at The Franklin Celebrates program as it expands to the high school in Franklin, Edward Rennells Jr., Casey Family Services division director has announced. Franklin Celebrates is a collaboration between Casey Family Services and the Franklin-Hill School District that has been operating Family Resource Centers at Franklin Middle School and at the Paul Smith Elementary School. Cusick has been with Casey Family Services for the past two years. Prior to joining Casey, she worked as a Pre-School Teacher and a Child Care Worker in Massachusetts. Cusick has a Bachelor's Degree in Child and Family Studies from the University of New Hampshire. The school district and Casey Family Services received a 21st Century Community Learning Center grant allowing the expansion to the high school. Programming there will include preparation for college, learning opportunities around life skills, access to employment and volunteer opportunities, and a student-run coffee house. Casey Family Services provides foster care and post-adoption services in addition to numerous family-based programs. The organization was founded in 1976 and has offices throughout New England and in Baltimore, Maryland. The Franklin Senior Center provides... A nutritious midday meal at 11:30 a.m. Monday through Friday (There is a $2.00 requested donation), Meals on Wheels to homebound seniors and individuals with disabilities, Senior transportation on our wheelchair accessible Community Action Program bus Monday through Friday (Door-to-door service is available upon request), Fellowships, information, entertainment, learning opportunities and much more. We are a ServiceLink satellite office providing information and referrals on issues related to aging, chronic illness, and disabilities. We are available to assist you with your needs. You will have access to a wide variety of brochures and informational materials in our Resource Room or stop by to speak to a ServiceLink representative. The VNA of Franklin will be holding a hospice volunteer training course, starting on September 5th and running for six consecutive Tuesdays through October 10th. Classes will be held at the VNA office on 75 Chestnut Street from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Hospice volunteers enhance the quality of life for those receiving hospice care. The Twin Rivers Interfaith Food Pantry (TRIFP) needs your help!!! Currently, the pantry in need of funds to help continue operations and meet the needs of our community. We fed 13,503 meals in the month of February 2006. We average approximately 12,000 meals each month throughout the year serving eight communities, Andover, Danbury, Franklin, Hill, Northfield, Salisbury, Sanbornton and Tilton. We purchase the food by the pound from the New Hampshire Food Bank through donations and are blessed to have USDA food and donations from Hannaford. We have never turned away a family in need, from any area, without food and a telephone number of a Food Pantry located in the area in which they live.The Twin Rivers Food Pantry is supported strictly through generous donations, of funds, time, talents, resources and prayers. We are very fortunate to have friends and benefactors willing to come together with mutual respect and a purposeful vision of feeding the hungry. Please feel welcome at any time to come and visit the TRIFP. We welcome any visitors and welcome ideas and suggestions. Our hours of operation by volunteers only are; Tuesday and Thursday from 9:00 am to 11:00 am and Wednesdays from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. We are located at Central Street at the St Jude’s Church (the brown building across from the public library).
